stupid, stupid cinnamon bun!

18 11 2008

Well, I managed to eek out 2.5 miles.  Boobs wrapped in the surgical wrap and an ace bandage.  They didn’t budge and didn’t hurt.  This is only the second time I have run since my surgery, and I only ran 1 mile the first time.  I also walked/ran. I walked .36 mile, quite slowly I might add, as a warm up.  For the rest of the sad attempt, I walked at 15:00 min/mi. pace and ran between a 12:00 and a 9:30 min/mi. when I ran.  A good effort I think, considering.  I had breathing issues the whole time since I have this yucky head cold that has been in our house for the last two weeks.  It won’t let go.  But the end result:  Cinnamon Bun GONE!!  And, I am getting re-motivated.  A bikini by the 1st trip to the beach this year.  That gives me, lets see, 5.5 months to get it back.  No problem.

I’m baaaaack!

4 11 2008

Well, if I didn’t start running 4 weeks sooner than I am supposed to!  I couldn’t take it any more.  My abs are starting to extend further than my boobs - so, it was time.

I had on a work out bra, and then wrapped the “operation area” up with the wrappy tube top thingy that they put on after surgery and then added an ace bandage wrapped around about 4 times.  Well I started walking to warm up (about 2 mins.) and then I started running.   I ran at a slow pace.  The fastest I went at one point was a 10:31 min/mi.  I had to get out for a Dr. appt., so I couldn’t go any longer.  I can still run and it felt friggin’ great to work up a sweat and feel that rush of adrenaline again.  I didn’t lose it after all.  It is still only 4 weeks post op and I am really not supposed to run for another 4 weeks.   The nurse at my Dr.’s office said that I really need to pay attention to my body.  I am not a dumb person, I am not going to hurt myself after all I have gone through - so for now, run a mile, walk a mile.   I am just happy to be on the “mill” again!!

little dixie cups of water

30 09 2008

So, I set up a water station (correct terminology?) on the desk next to my treadmill. I lined up little dixie cups of water like you see in races. I stopped when I was thirsty and drank a little cup of water and then got back on the treadmill and crumpled up the cup and threw it on the floor….. kidding. I did set up a water station, but I didn’t throw the cups on the floor. I get such dry mouth when I am running.

Surgery 6 days away. Scared, nervous, excited, freaking out. Just some words to describe what I am feeling all at once.

I set out to do maybe 2-3 miles today and my old, bad knee was twitching. It was somewhat uncomfortable, so I stopped. I figure I am running every day for the next 6 days, so doing only 1.5 isn’t bad (since I should be taking days off in between).

Time to get on with our day! Have a good day everyone!

100 mi. for me too!!!

29 09 2008

Well, to echo another blogger earlier this weekend, I have also passed my 100 mi. mark since starting on sweat365!! And, I also echo his sentiment that for some of you, this can be done in a few weeks. However, I was NOT a runner when I started posting, but I am now. I am really proud of myself and glad that I reached this milestone before my surgery (7 days!!). I will need the 100+ mile reminder while I am not able to work out or run - so that I will force myself back into it when I am able.

Will do pilates later this afternoon. My goal this week: to run & do pilates every day until surgery. I also have to wean myself off of my tea. I have to drink de-caf after the surgery and need to start weaning….yesterday! I usually have 2 cups in the a.m. and 1 in the afternoon. I hope I don’t go into shock! While healing: brown rice, roasted veggies & turkey/chicken. Since I will be on my ass for a week +, no junk/low calories. I want to start back into it maybe only 1-2 lbs more than I am now. Getting nervous. I guess you do when you have children and it is elective surgery.

short comfy run with Kid Rock

26 09 2008

Had about 25 mins to fit in a run. (Have been so busy I am posting yesterday’s run now) I walked a good 2/10 mi. to warm up at a reasonably comfortable speed. Wanted to warm up those shins and not be sore while running. The actual run felt nice. The 1st mile went by and I really hadn’t paid much attention to the info. on the treadmill. (maybe because I was watching Kid Rock on Ellen!) and then I kind of started getting bored - as usual. All in all it was a comfortable and decent run for me, considering I have been slacking. Will run again tomorrow a.m. Definitely NOT doing the 5k in the morning. A: it is supposed to be REALLY rainy and gross outside and B: I just am not ready and not excited about it. So, not doin’ it. 10 days until surgery.

Lazy fool.

20 09 2008

I figured it out today and realized that I had not put in a decent effort to run since 9/3. That is about 17 days. Not good. I got dressed (wow - in warmer weather running clothes) and set outside, husband is home so I could actually leave the house. Put on the iPod and ran. I was out of breath sooner than you could say “are you out of breath?”. Holy shit! I have already lost the breathing ability in just 17 days. Maybe it was allergens, maybe the cooler weather, but I sucked….wind that is. I walked probably about 1/2 mi. out of the 2 miles. I was SOOOOO winded. So, I have made an executive decision that I am an idiot for not properly training and for being so lazy. If I am not ready by Saturday, I will not participate in the 5k. I cannot believe that beyond breaking my toe, that I was so complacent and lazy in the last few weeks. I have just been so busy with the children and our Fall schedules. Damn. This just goes to show what it will be like after my surgery. Run again tomorrow a.m. - treadmill style.

back into it

11 09 2008

I only had about 10 mins to devote to running this a.m. so I ran a mile. I actually felt really good and could have continued if time permitted. Will no doubt be ready and amped for my next 5k. They say it starts with a long, gradual hill. Not so sure how I feel about that. Run again tomorrow. (hey - tje210(coach) how do I train for that?)

good enough for today.

3 09 2008

My legs are still sore from pushing myself so hard during Monday’s 5k. So, I just couldn’t get myself to run any further today. But, I wanted to get in a run and get back to the schedule. I have found however, that I really enjoy running outside on a fairly flat course. So, I think on the days that my middle child is in pre-school (in a town that is much flatter than my own), I will bring the jogger and run with the little one. That will take care of 2 days/week and will give me a nice change of scenery. I can do that as long as the weather permits. I think it will be enjoyable during the fall!

Well, I have been bitten by the bug. I am signing up for my next 5k today. It is on Sept. 27th. I am excited because it happens to benefit Children’s Hospital in Boston, and my little one is scheduled for surgery there in Nov. They say it is a challenging course (what am I doing???) - but from what the organizer says, the challenging part is a long gradual hill at the beginning, what do you think?? I really want to do one more 5k before my surgery in Oct. So, what the heck!

I did it, I did it, I did it!!!!!!!

1 09 2008

Well, all that stressing over nothing. Phew, it is done, when’s the next one…..sign me up! So there were over 1,000 runners. And I came in 631st!! Now, that isn’t too bad. I was happy not to be last. I finished before my 8 year old daughter’s best friend, that is good.

I ate oatmeal (that seems to work), had a bout of nerves that went to my intestines (if you know what I mean without typing it). I left the house @ 8:00ish with my neighbor who ran with me. I was soooooo nervous, I thought I was going to puke. We got there, signed in, got our #’s and chips, used the porta-pottys and lined up. The weather was beautiful! A nice breeze, not too hot. Although, the sun was really beating down on me with no relief during the last mile. The gun went off, and my little family was on the sidelines with signs saying “go mom” that they made yesterday when I wasn’t home. My husband is an illustrator and made the coolest sign which was an illustration of a “fluff-a-nutter” sandwich (see attached photo). It was such a surprise and motivator (although a real fluff sandwich would have been appreciated after the race. (note to self: bring one next time)

The first mile was o.k. we passed a lot of people and set a pace. My neighbor really pushed me - which was good. My music was synced perfectly and worked amazingly well. I was totally parched by the 1st mile mark water station. I used both water stations - and of course soaked myself. At the 1 mile mark I think I was at 10:20. At the 2 mile mark we were just under 20:00. At the second water station at the 2 mi. mark, the water was just at the base of a slow hill, so it really slowed me down and I need to catch my breath. I walked for about 30 sec.-1 min. I told my neighbor to go ahead, she said “are you sure” and I said yes. So, I ran the last mile by myself. My music was amazing. There was a second hill at around 2.5 miles. I was alone and trying to convince myself to not walk. Then “I Still Believe” by The Call came on. Just as I am slowing and getting tired, the lyrics say “I’ll march this road, I’ll climb this hill, upon my knees if I have to…” It was so perfect and made me smile to myself. I finished at 30:50. 2:10 faster than I had hoped. I came running in to “Can’t Stop” by the Chili Peppers, it was awesome. I would have been in about 5 seconds faster but just about at the finish line, I run by my mom, who is poised and ready to take a picture and misses me. So, I slow and I am yelling “Mom, Mom” She didn’t see me. But I think it blew about 5 seconds. O.k. Next time - no walking, I will carry a small squirty bottle of water so that I don’t have to stop at all. The Motrin worked on my knee like a charm, no pain at all during the race. I also really enjoyed running outside and the pavement wasn’t that bad.

It was A LOT of fun, I am so proud of myself and thank all of you who inspired, supported and otherwise listened to my obsessive compulsive rantings. I will be signing up for another race before decent running weather is over. I am taking tomorrow off!

guessing on the time & distance of a yucky little run.

31 08 2008

I am going to go out & measure the distance. I also forgot to press stop on my watch so, I am not sure on the time, I think I was out for about 13 mins. I walked a bit. I am really concerned about my knee. I have to make an appointment to see my ortho. that operated on it in Jan. I think I have torn it again. Something really bad is going on, since it is more sore than it was prior to having surgery. When I run, my knee is screaming “STOP!”. I will make an appointment on Tuesday, but then there is this 5k to run tomorrow a.m. I am going to take some Motrin before I leave in the a.m. I am really not feeling that confident. But I will lie and say I am, so that subconsciously I will be more confident than I really am.

I did load a new ipod shuffle with music specifically chosen for this run:

John Frusciante, “The Past Recedes” (awesome song for any John Frusciante fans out there!)
Presidents of the USA, “Lump”
Red Hot Chili Peppers, “By the way”
Bel Biv DeVoe, “Poison”
Vampire Weekend, “A-Punk”
Deee Lite, “Groove is in the Heart”
The Call, “I still Believe”
Outkast, “Hey Ya”
Red Hot Chili Peppers, “Can’t Stop”

I am kinda psyched, I think that that should get me through the race.

The kids are looking forward to the fun run after the race!
